The Insurance Managers Association of Cayman (IMAC), which represents insurance managers based in the jurisdiction, has pointed to continued momentum within Cayman’s international insurance market, following the release of the Cayman Islands Monetary Authority’s (CIMA) licensing figures for the second quarter of 2026.

CIMA’s statistics show that six new international insurer licences were granted in the three months to the end of June 2026, each falling within the class B(i) category, together with three additional Portfolio Insurance Companies (PICs). Per CIMA’s figures, this brings the overall number of new international insurance licences issued during 2026 to date to 20.

CIMA has further reported that 17 licence applications are presently going through review, a figure IMAC regards as a promising sign for activity over the remainder of the year. For context, CIMA data shows that 41 new international insurance licences were issued across the whole of 2025.

Factoring in the latest figures, CIMA reports that Cayman is now home to 721 licensed Class B, C and D insurers, which between them write in the region of USD $61 billion in premiums and hold combined assets of approximately USD $190 billion. CIMA’s figures show this to be an increase since the first quarter of the year of roughly US$10 billion in premium income and USD $14 billion in total asset value.

IMAC has suggested that the sustained growth in class B(i) licences underscores Cayman’s continued appeal as a domicile of choice for single-parent captives, further cementing its reputation as one of the world’s foremost centres for international insurance.

Responding to the second-quarter data, IMAC Chair James Trundle commented: “These figures demonstrate the ongoing strength and diversity of Cayman’s international insurance industry and showcases the jurisdiction’s appeal for a wide range of captive and reinsurance structures. It is indeed encouraging to see the continued growth in new insurance license activity during the first half of 2026.”
